Today in: "Welcome to the Chaos Interview" Morgan E. Valley of Washington Husky

Today in: "Welcome to the Chaos Interview" Morgan E. Valley assistant coach of Washington Husky

Where did your basketball knowledge come from?

I have just grown up playing and watching...

Why did you decide to become a coach?

When I got to college I realized it was a way to stay in the game.  I wanted to play until I could not and then get into coaching and teach young people what I was taught.  Not only about basketball but about life as well.

What has been the best moment in your sporting life so far? And the worst?

Best:  As a player winning 3 National Championships.  As a Coach, going to the final four last year.
Worst: As a player getting injured.  As a coach, seeing a young person not finish what they started.

What are your goals for this season, both individually and as a team?

Our goals are always to get better.  To improve a little every day.  1 degree better all around.  That's what we are striving for this year.

What’s the difference between being good and being great?

Little things...It's always little things.  If you can do little things great your pretty much unstoppable.

What are the foundations of a solid basketball program?

Discipline, carry over, attention to detail. Hard work!

What’s the best way to build team chemistry?

Finding players who enjoy the game and enjoy each other.

Last season you guys made it to the Final Four, did you think at any point during the season that reaching the Final Four was a possibility?

I think anything is possible when you have great players like we do.

What memories do you have from the Final Four?

Just the looks on their faces...the excitement they had, the raw emotions they showed.  I'll never for get it!

Kelsey Plum is a great basketball player. On the court she is like to shark, always in attack mode trying to destroy her opponent. Does Kelsey have the same character off the court? How is she off the court?

Kelsey is pretty chill off the court.  Just likes to play basketball, talk basketball.  she really lives and breathes the game.

The next thing I'm going to tell you it's not nice, some people in my country Spain (in my opinion some stupid people) that have seen videos of Chantel Osahor have said stupid things such as "with that body she can not play basketball" . I know her, and she is one of the best centers in the PAC12 and the NCAA in my opinion. For people who do not know Chantel, how is she on and off the court?

C is a GREAT player and a great person.  She has proved people wrong her entire life...doing it a little longer is just what she does!

Briana Ruiz has suffered two serious injuries in the last two seasons that have limited her playing time. How does she feel?

She is doing great!  Running and cutting....she is very happy with where she is at this point.

MSU coach Suzy Merchant OK after collapsing on sideline

MSU coach Suzy Merchant OK after collapsing on sideline

A scary moment took place early in the fourth quarter of the Michigan State women’s basketball team’s Big Ten opener Sunday when Suzy Merchant collapsed on the sideline at Breslin Center.

The 47-year old Merchant hit the ground in front of the bench with just under eight minutes left in the game and was down briefly. She was eventually helped up and taken back into the locker area.

MSU associate head coach Amaka Agugua reported that Merchant was fine following the Spartans’ 71-47 victory.

"First of all that was very scary," Agugua said. "She went down pretty hard. She fainted and was a little discombobulated when she got up. She was trying to figure out what happened. She’s doing well. She knows what happened at the end of the game. She was communicating very well. She’s going to be OK."

The Spartans led just 48-43 when play was stopped when Merchant fell to the floor. MSU scored 14 unanswered points after the scary moment to pull away for the victory over the Illini.

"She's our head to our monster and we play really hard for ourselves and for our teammates," MSU senior guard and captain Tori Jankoska said. "She's the one that makes us go. She's the one making all the decisions and giving up all the time with her family. When that happened, we just kind of rallied together and tried to keep our minds focused. It kind of re-energized us as a team."

Michigan State released a statement Sunday night that Merchant was transported to Sparrow Hospital in Lansing for tests and will be kept overnight as a precautionary measure.
